Hydra, also known as Lernaean Hydra or Hydra of Lerna, refers to the nine-headed aquatic serpent from Greek mythology. The monster haunts the swamps of Lerna and is reputed to have guarded the entrance to the Underworld. It had poisonous blood and blood so virulent that even its scent was deadly, and if one of its heads was cut off, it would be replaced by two more heads. The Hydra was killed by Hercules as one of his twelve labors and the method of killing it varies on different versions of the myth.
