The ringleader of the mystery death of the North Whales. Killed 15 divers that went to investigate.

Karkinos (カルキノス Karukinosu) is a giant Japanese spider crab (Macrocheira kaempferi) that resides in the North Sea. He is the fifth boss in The Ocean Hunter.

Background

Created by Rahab to oversee the North Sea, Karkinos was responsible for the near extinction of the whale population in the North Sea and 15 divers who were investigating the incident.

The bounty on the capture or death of this monstrous crustacean is 15,000 G.

The Ocean Hunter

After defeating Medusa and her jellyfish minions, Torel and Chris arrived at a spot where most of the dead North Sea whales were found on the sea floor. Shortly after looking around, Karkinos suddenly appeared from behind and attacked the two adventurers, who fought back.

Halfway into the battle, Torel and Chris attempted to retreat, but Karkinos swiftly blocked their path with his claws and attempted to bite them. Despite the odds, however, Torel and Chris were able to defeat the monster, ending Karkinos' reign of the North Sea.

Gameplay

Sunburst Area/Vulnearble areas: Claws (first part), legs (second part)
Sweet Spot/Weakpoint: Eyes

The boss fight is split into three parts.

Karkinos will first try to crush the player(s) with one of his claws. The player(s) must rapidly and continuously fire directly at the incoming claw. Depending on the direction the claw is coming at, it may be difficult to score direct shots at it, but possible if aiming slightly below the claw. Once the player(s) have blasted enough shots at that incoming claw, Karkinos will back away and the pattern repeats again. The player(s) may continue to fire at Karkinos before the next attack.

After one-third of his health is gone, Karkinos will pin the protagonists to the sea floor and will try to trample them with three of his legs. The player(s) must fire at the incoming legs, specifically in a pattern (i.e. left-middle-right).

Once his health is reduced to almost a half, after the cutscene, Karkinos will then try to bite at the player(s). From here on, the Sweet Spot will be revealed, and the player(s) must continuously fire at him before the 5-second time limit ends. Aim and fire slightly under his eyes - the shots will "float" up to his eyes. Karkinos will be defeated after taking three shots to the Sweet Spot(s).

Trivia

  • Although Karkinos is listed as a Japanese spider crab (Macrocheira kaempferi), he's more closely resembles a giant red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus). However, both species are native to the Pacific Ocean, not the Arctic.
  • A creature of the same name from ARK: Survival Evolved resembles Karkinos but slightly smaller and with a black color scheme.
